The HoST - Special Edition

New Year, New HoST

Dear CoHST family and friends,

Welcome back to the spring semester! We hope you had a wonderful holiday, as we did here in the college. The new year represents many new beginnings; in our college, this means new academic lessons and experiential learning opportunities.

Additionally, the college saw the departure of Dr. Bridget Niland, Dean of the college, who accepted a provost position at another institution. The college is incredibly grateful to Dr. Niland for the time she spent working successfully to place the college on an upward trajectory and building learning opportunities for students.

It is my honor to be asked to serve as Acting Dean and the spring semester promises to be better than ever. We have an abundance of opportunities for students both in and out of the classroom. Students looking for new experiences this spring semester will have no shortage of opportunities. The college has worked diligently over the winter to continue preparing for a few new spring trips, including opportunities such as a visit to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in Indianapolis, IN, to learn about the internal operations of college athletics. For students interested in tourism, there is the opportunity to attend the New York State Tourism Industry Association (NYSTIA) conference in Canandaigua, NY, in April.

While new events bring new excitement, our traditional attendance at events such as the CMAA world conference, Super Bowl, MLB spring training, Greensboro, the MAAC basketball tournament and Lake Como will continue this spring.

Moving forward this spring, CoHST will continue to be steadfast in our responsibility to prepare students for incredible careers in the ever-changing and growing hospitality, sport, and tourism industries. As Will Guidara stated in his book Unreasonable Hospitality, “We have an opportunity—a responsibility—to make magic in a world that desperately needs more of it.” For the upcoming semester, each month, the HoST will showcase a guest writer from the college, inviting you to discover the magic they bring and their impactful role in developing meaningful experiences for the students.

As always, we are grateful for the team at CoHST and we thank you for being a part of our college family. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions.

Sincerely,

Brandi Guerinot, Acting Dean
